Choctaw Casinos Named Official Casino of 2027 PGA Championship
A tribal operator from Oklahoma takes a first-ever sponsor category at one of golf's four majors, aimed squarely at its Texas feeder market.
When the PGA of America named Choctaw Casinos & Resorts the official casino resort of the 2027 PGA Championship on August 31, 2026, it marked a first for a tournament that is 111 years old: no official casino partner had been named before. The designation, which also gives the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma the title of official community partner, puts a tribal gaming brand in front of one of golf's largest audiences in a state where the tribe does not hold a casino license.
The partnership
The 2027 PGA Championship is scheduled for May 17 to 23, 2027, at PGA Frisco, about 25 miles north of downtown Dallas. The PGA of America expects roughly 200,000 spectators across the week, and tickets for all four rounds sold out more than nine months in advance. As part of the agreement, Choctaw will convert the Ice House, a sports bar and golf venue at PGA Frisco, into a premium daily hospitality venue. Daily VIP tickets for that space have already sold out, according to published reports.
Heidi Grant, a senior executive officer for the Choctaw Nation, described the event as a historic opportunity for the state of Texas. The Choctaw Nation's gaming and hospitality operations are headquartered in Durant, Oklahoma, and we profile the enterprise in our Choctaw Nation Oklahoma gaming profile.
Why a casino sponsor in a state without casinos
The logic is geographic. Texas does not permit commercial casinos, and the tribes that do operate gaming in the state do so under restrictions tied to federal law and Supreme Court precedent rather than the full Class III menu available in neighboring Oklahoma. The Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area is among the largest in the country and sits within driving distance of Choctaw's Durant properties, which sit just across the Red River. Our analysis of Texas cross-border demand examines how much of the Oklahoma tribal market already depends on Texas visitors.
A championship in Frisco is therefore a marketing opportunity to reach an affluent, golf-oriented audience in the very feeder market the Choctaw Nation relies on. The sponsorship is brand advertising, not a gaming activity. Nothing about it extends casino gaming into Texas, and coverage notes that sports betting remains prohibited in both Oklahoma and Texas.
The sports betting backdrop
The announcement stands out in part because of who held the category previously. ESPN Bet served as the PGA Championship's official sports betting sponsor from 2024 through 2026, but that arrangement ended early when ESPN Bet ceased operations in December 2025. The 2027 deal therefore replaces a mobile betting brand with a land-based tribal casino brand rather than another sportsbook, which is consistent with the legal environment in the host state.
That substitution is a useful data point for the wider industry. Major sports properties that once courted national online sportsbooks are now working with a smaller field of partners, and tribal operators with strong regional brands and hospitality capacity are a natural fit. Our overview of tribal operators and sports and entertainment assets traces how this strategy has developed, from team ownership to venue naming to event hospitality.
Regulatory and community dimensions
Advertising by tribal casinos is shaped by a mix of tribal gaming ordinances, National Indian Gaming Commission rules, and general advertising law, as we describe in our advertising and marketing explainer. Sponsorship at an event outside Indian country adds a further layer, because the audience is in a jurisdiction where the tribe's gaming is not authorized. Operators generally address that by promoting the resort brand, dining, entertainment and golf rather than gaming offers. The coverage reviewed here does not detail the specific creative or promotional content Choctaw plans to use at the championship.
The community partner designation is also worth noting. It signals that the Choctaw Nation intends the relationship to be framed around more than casino marketing, though the public announcements do not specify programs, funding amounts or charitable commitments. Those specifics will be worth tracking as the tournament approaches.
What it means for tribal brand strategy
Official-partner designations have traditionally gone to categories with deep marketing budgets and broad national reach. A tribal casino resort earning that status says something about how the sector's largest operators now position themselves: as hospitality and entertainment companies with a brand that can stand alongside banks, automakers and beverage makers in a sponsor roster. That positioning matters for recruitment, for customer loyalty programs that increasingly span multiple properties, and for the tribe's standing with state and local officials who see the enterprise as an economic partner.
What to watch
Three questions will shape how this partnership is judged. First, whether similar designations spread to other major championships and franchises, which would indicate that sports properties see tribal casinos as durable sponsors. Second, how Choctaw measures return, since brand awareness in North Texas must ultimately translate into visits to Durant and other properties. Third, whether Texas's own policy debates over gaming shift in a way that changes the competitive picture.
For now, the deal is best understood as a marketing and hospitality play by one of the region's largest tribal operators, timed to a sold-out event in its most important out-of-state market. It does not alter the legal framework for gaming in Texas or Oklahoma, but it does illustrate how far tribal brands have moved beyond the reservation boundary in how they compete for customers.
